In 2023, there were many advancements made to technology. Although these advancements are beneficial to us, they unfortunately create vulnerabilities when it comes to security. This year, it’s expected that newer trends like AI, QR codes, multi-factor authentication, are scammer’s top targets when committing fraud. See which upcoming scams you should lookout for as you head into the new year.
AI-DRIVEN SCAMS
Gone are the days when an illegitimate email contains obvious grammar and spelling errors. With AI advancements, scammers are able to write more convincing phishing emails. AI can also take form in a video or phone call, where the scammer can replicate faces and voices of celebrities or well-known public figures, in hopes of receiving personal information or even investments in their upcoming project.
TEXT SCAMS
Cell phone usage is not expected to slow down anytime soon, which is why scammers will continue to reach out via this method. Most frequently, a text scam will be in the form of an impersonated business, like a bank or shipping company. The message will contain enticing information such as suggesting that there has been suspicious activity in your account with a malicious link to review, or your package has shipped with a link to a tracking code.
ONE-TIME PASSWORD SCAMS
Multi-factor authentication has become an increasingly popular measure of security. Like all new security trends, scammers will find a way to capitalize on it. How it works is a scammer will attempt to login into one of your accounts. Once they are prompted with the authentication code, they will contact you, posing as the company and request that you provide the code. Once they receive it, they now have access to your personal account.
QR CODE SCAMS
QR codes are a convenient way for businesses to easily share information. Because of the increasing comfortability for people using QR codes, there are now vulnerabilities for you to keep an eye out for. Scammers may try to place QR codes posing as businesses to entice people to make downloads, purchases or even enter personal account information.
PEER TO PEER PAYMENT SCAMS
Peer to peer (P2P) apps have also grown increasingly popular due to its convenience for sending and receiving money from trusted personnel. Popular scams that will likely be seen more this year are scammers posing as your bank, claiming that there are suspicious payments made through your P2P app and will provide instructions on how to fix it, which will then lead to them receiving access to your account.
